What got you interested in microbiology?
I was interested, from an early age, in the causes of human diseases and infection. This encouraged me to study a biology course.

Why did you choose your degree course?
The course allowed me to have a choice of either a straight forward degree or a sandwich degree i.e. industrial placement. The course is modular, which suits the way I work best and also allows me to explore other fields of science.

What do you like about university?
University is a chance for me to continue down my career pathway and at the same time have a fun student life. I like the friendly environment and the fact that campus is fairly close to home.

Why did you choose Oxoid for your industrial training?
It offered me a chance to gain useful practical microbiology experience in an industrial workplace.

What sort of work are you doing at Oxoid? Using a wide variety of microbiological techniques and methods, I am conducting work for two projects, testing new and existing Oxoid products.

What have you enjoyed most about the placement?
The friendly environment and flexible work hours have helped me in my time at Oxoid. The work involved has not been overly repetitive, and hence I've had the opportunity to carry out my own research and this has made the work more enjoyable. This is important, because I'm thinking about microbiology research and development work as a career option.

How useful has the placement been?
It has increased my experience of lab techniques and made me more confident about working in the lab. Most of the time it does not feel like I am working, but more like I am studying and expanding my knowledge of microbiology.

What are your plans for the future?
After completion of my degree in 2005, I would like to continue studying in either virology or molecular biology genetics and hopefully start a career in research.

Do you have any advice for students thinking about applying to university?
Make sure you apply for the course you are interested in and think about how well you will be able to study in this environment. Also, think carefully about geographical location and the financial side of things.
